Don Nelson initially started woodworking as a part-time helper to a master craftsman cabinetmaker while in high school. During College and University years and throughout his Engineering career, he continued to develop woodworking skills; building furniture, helping to construct cottages and completing a house addition as well as several renovations. After retiring from Engineering he and his wife settled on Manitoulin Island where he has a wood working shop and a unique home combining conventional and timber frame techniques using local timber, lumber and stone. He formed Nelson Woodcraft in 2009 and photos of some of his completed projects are shown below. Don specializes in projects where he takes a customer’s concept or idea, develops the detailed design, and produces a tailored product. Recently he has collaborated with Island artisans on the final finishing touches as highlighted in the photos of the night table.
